Very Expensive Tokyo

I'm in Tokyo for a total of 3 days for a meeting. I was smart to have called my bank to make sure my ATM card doesn't get locked while I'm traveling, but I was dumb enough to think 20,000 JPY can last me 3 days.

Here's how I spent close to 7,000 JPY without trying at all:

  • Airport Shuttle: 3,000 JPY
  • Ramen: 600 JPY
  • Melon: 350 JPY
  • A very stupid toy: 200 JPY
  • Drinks and snacks: 700 JPY
  • A travel-size bottle: 105 JPY
  • Body lotion: 1260 JPY
  • Takoyaki: 500 JPY
  • Rice Ball: 190 JPY

Granted... I bought enough drinks to last me all 3 days because this cheap hotel doesn't provide any complimentary water. But, that's still more than what I spent in a work week in Beijing.

Flying Business Class

As a person who’s always had short legs, the leg room issue with the economy class never bothered me. But, I remember how he and I were elated when we were upgraded to Business class on our way back from our first trip to Europe. Yes, we were the stupid tourists taking pictures of the biz class coz it was our first time in that cabin. Now, fast forward 6 years, I’m writing this blog on my way to Beijing, sitting in the biz class, not really thinking too much about it.

A little girl running up and down the aisle and a pair of what seems to be sisters taking a walking tour of the cabin reminded how I used to feel about flying business class. Flying (even economy) used to be such a privilege. Now, I see a plane as little more than a shuttle that takes me from point A to point B. Of course, I’m still too cheap to buy biz class tickets with my own money, but because I travel so much for work that it’s merely commonplace now.

So, what brought me to write this blog? Because the guy next to me just WON’T close the window shade. By the way he fumbles with the seat and the meal procedure, I’m guessing he probably doesn't fly very often. As much as the light annoys me, I am refraining from saying anything because I remember how excited I once was about looking out the window. Let someone else have the experience... I just hope the last 3 hours of my flight will pass by more quickly.

Outliers

I've just finished reading the Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. While I can't say his books are very well researched, they do have pretty good stories that you can use for small talks.

The following excerpt basically summarizes the whole book:
Success follows a predictable course. It is not the brightest who succeed. Nor is success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities - and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.

Since I don't have deep understanding of European culture, I can't say very much about that. But, him basing the success of Chinese Americans on the cultural legacy of Southern Chinese working in rice paddies is just off. It shows that he has tried too hard to find an example that's parallel to the rest of the stories in the book. Maybe I only saw through that because I AM Chinese American. He said Sze Yap people are the lowest-achieving Chinese American because the soil in the Sze Yap area is less fertile. Ehm... he probably doesn't know that a good chunk of HK people are descendants of Sze Yap people. And, HK people are not underachieving. And, what about the Northern Chinese? If it isn't in the cultural legacy of Northern Chinese to work hard, then why are 2 of the most prestigious Chinese universities in Beijing?

I guess that's the problem with generalizing and trying too hard to make everything support your hypotheses. Malcolm Gladwell, after all, isn't a psychologist, anthropologist, or sociologist. He clearly has a strong interest in these areas, but in the end, he's just a smart author who knows how to write books that sell.

Getting Ready to Leave

Despite the ridiculously high income taxes, there are many great things about living in the Bay Area - my family and friends, the sun, clean air, relatively mild weather, relatively good roads, relatively sensible drivers, etc. I could go on for quite some time, but I think the point is clear. It's great to be home, and I'm going to miss it when I'm in Beijing. Goodbye to all the goodness in Bay Area, and hello to smoggy days AND night, freezing temperature, crazy cab drivers that smell from waiting in the car too long, and dirty bathrooms. BUT, I'll finally be in the same city with him.

Little Superhero Girl

by Corinne May

I feel like a little girl
Trying to conquer the whole wide world
Everybody wants a piece of me
And I just don't know where to turn
I've got work piled up to my head
All I want to do is jump into bed
And wash away my troubles
with lemonade
Play hide and seek
with the boy next door
Take a trip to Singapore and
Imagine how I'll make the world
a better place

All I need is a good disguise
One where nobody can recognise
That I'm feeling so small
All I need is a secret weapon
I've gotta have faith
Zapping monsters into outer space
I'm gonna be a Superhero

Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-
Yeah

If I were a little girl
Trying to clean up the whole wide world
I'd kick the bad boys back to school
Teach them fighting's just not cool
I'd give every kid a teddy bear
Turn starving people into millionaires
Break glass ceilings with dynamite
sprinkle a little sugar and spice
Turn the bullies that terrorize
Into pink poodles that bark,
but don't bite

All I need is a good disguise
One where nobody can recognise
That I'm feeling so small
All I need is a secret weapon
I've gotta have faith
Zapping monsters into outer space
I'm gonna be a Superhero

Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-
Yeah

Little Superhero Girl
Little Superhero Girl
Save me
Little Superhero Girl
Little Superhero Girl
Save me from myself

I feel like a little girl
Trying to conquer the whole wide world

I'm Feeling Lucky

今日本來心情好差。 四點幾肚痛痛醒, check in 時又話 luggage 不可以帶上飛機, 又嬲老細。 不過, 食飯時羅發票時又中獎! :) 雖然只是 RMB 10, 不過心情好返好多。 :)

Christianity in China

After going to local churches in Beijing and Xiamen, I don't get why people need to be so hush-hush about the missionary trips or why I still hear stories about underground churches.

To the left is a picture of the church I went to in Xiamen. The building is enormous, and the congregation is at least double that of LGCC. As far as I can tell, their teachings are pretty normal:
  • Holy Trinity
  • We're all sinners
  • Jesus Christ is God's only the begotten Son, was born of Virgin Mary, died on the cross for our sins, and resurrected in 3 days
  • Baptism
  • Salvation through faith
The Bamboo Church (ZhuShu Tang) is the other big community. Their website (click here), which can be found easily on all search engines, has lots of resources and is pretty well developed. And, here is a big BBS site in Xiamen.

Is this openness towards Christianity only true in the cities? I just don't get it... Can anyone explain this to me?

What's the Point?

It seems to take me longer and longer to update my blog. There are many times when I would write up a post in my head, but somehow never got around to actually typing it up. All of my managers have told me to work on my work-life balance, but they're the ones who keep dumping impossible amount of work on me. Yes, I should learn to say no and prioritize my work. And, yes, I should learn to work smarter, not harder. All sound good in writing, but it's of course much harder in action - as with everything else in life... I've learned the hard way that I can only run as fast as I can for so long. My body has given me warnings for a long time, but I can feel it giving up on me now. So, damn it, I'm saying no to weekend work and the ridiculous hours. Fire me for all I care.

I'm starting to question if what I'm doing now is really worth all the sacrifices I've made. All in exchange for meager monetary gain and professional accomplishments. There should be a bigger meaning behind all this, right? Reaching the big three-o is a bit scary. I still have some time left, but looking back at my life in the 20's so far, everything is a blur. All I can remember are school, work, wedding, work, work, and some more work.

Getting married was a highlight, but I'm not really sure what married life means. I live on my own for the most part, and I don't see this changing anytime soon in the future. I honestly feel like it's not any different from dating life - minus the little romantic gestures... Is getting married just a way to secure someone to grow old with or a prerequisite for having kids? Or, is it just something everyone else is doing? Don't get me wrong, I love him, and I'm glad to be his wife. I'm just wondering if getting married changed anything. Only seeing each other over the weekend can't be the long-term solution, but I don't know what else can be done. It may work for now, but we're bound to grow apart eventually. I'm not being pessimistic, just realistic.

Where to Go...?

Time really does fly when you're kept busy. The past 2 months have been somewhat like a blur to me, but at least I enjoy what I'm doing at work - yes, finally. It's true that I'm not as good at what I'm doing now, but there's always room for improvement. I rather build skills in an area that seems interesting to me than to become an expert in something that bores me to death.

We have planned to go to Tibet in May for a long time now. But, while we are going back and forth on whether I want to take 3 whole weeks off just for Tibet, the riots broke out. The Chinese government has, of course, tried to stifle foreign media coverage, but that's not so easy to do when Tibet is swarming with tourists.

Below is a link to a video captured by an Australian tourist:

According to the video, the Tibetan protesters aren't exactly peaceful, so it's little wonder the Chinese government brought in the tanks. I know that this is just one video, but it certainly looks like the Tibetans are the ones who are instigating the violence. The activists say that the influx of Han Chinese is threatening their ancient culture. But, killing the innocent and looting stores owned by the Hans do not help the situation. Whether they like it or not, Tibet is part of China right now, and Chinese citizens are free to go about the country, even if Tibet were autonomous. Tibet could have the Chinese government step in to help preserve their culture, but causing Beijing to lose face on the eve of the Olympics isn't going to help make their case. Luckily, China has to worry about its image before the showcase Olympics. But, who knows what they will do after August 24.

As for my vacation, I guess I don't really have to worry about taking 3 weeks off anymore, since Tibet is probably not the safest place right now. Yunnan is enticing, but part of me really wants to explore somewhere else. I guess I'm feeling a bit Chinaed out at the moment.

A New Chapter in Life

It's 6:39am. And, he's really gone. On board the 6:55am flight on route from San Jose to Chicago, where he'll get on another flight to go to his final destination. I know we probably could have sued. Not sure if we could have won or not, but we could have fought this more. In the end, he sucked it up and went through with it. I know many people would question my rationality, but I believe we can't fight it if it's God's plan. Everything will fall into its place.

We may think that it’s by our own strength and skill that we make our way, but who do we think gave us our abilities? (Deut. 8:17-18) And, if He knows and meets the needs of the flowers and the birds, how much more will He do the same for us?
Matthew 6: 25, 26-27, 33-34
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear ... Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? ... Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Trust in the Lord for giving him all that he needs.

Why me?

It’s been a long time since I’ve had the “why me?” feeling, but lately, that’s all I can think of. Why does he have to be away from me when I need him the most each and every single time? Why does my brother have to get dragged into the reserves during the worst time? Why can’t he understand that my family needs me during this time? Why can’t I find a project in China now? Why can’t things go back to the way they used to be? WHY?

I have many questions, but no answers. I hate crying, but I can’t help it. If I can’t even cry to the one person that I’m supposed to grow old with, then whom can I cry to? Acting tough is really hard, but I have to hide all my fears and worries so that the ones I love won’t feel worse. I admit that I’m weak, and maybe I’m just a self-pitying fool. But, can’t we just let loose and cry it all out every once in a while? I can’t keep all these emotions pent up forever. I know crying doesn’t help anyone or anything, but at least it makes me feel better at this moment. I want to curl up by his side, but of course, all I get for my vulnerability is insensitivity. I get that this is not part of his plan, and I get that this is not what he wants. But, can’t he at least *try* to understand??? Everything is part of God’s plan, and I can’t question it. All I can do is pray, but I don’t know when my prayers will be answered. Why does everything have to happen at the same time? I just want a normal life… Nothing fancy, just plain, old ordinary life.

Thank you, my friend!

Thank you very much for being such a great friend, MH. You're always there for me through thick and thin, and you know me better than anyone else. You know exactly what I like and what I don't care for, how to comfort me when I'm down and how to share my joy when I'm happy. You're always there to take care of me when I need help the most. Even though you're not physically with me, I know I'll always have a shoulder to cry on. I've very thankful that God has let us be friends.

Sachertorte = Success!

My parents came to South Bay to have lunch and dinner with me today. In addition to cleaning up my entire house, dad also made dinner for me. 好感動哦!!! We had dinner, watched a movie, and ate the sachertorte I spent the whole Sunday evening on. :)

Happy early birthday, mom! :)

Interesting Weekend

Before I start talking about all this weekend, I want to thank all those who gave me words of wisdom and support in the past couple weeks. I still haven't figured everything out yet, but at least I have the decision tree down. And, at this moment, I'm just waiting for more information before I know which branch to take.

After talking to a few friends about my situation, I realized I'm definitely not the first or last to face this. The thing that struck me, though, is that the recurring theme in most of the stories is that the guy is moving out of country for his family/career, and the girl is only moving for the guy... 女生外向 ... is there really truth to that? I love my family very, very much, and it'd be very hard for me to leave them. But, I digress... I agree with E that love should fair, but life itself isn't fair. Guess we just have to make the best out of it. Thanks again for all your encouragement, my friends! :)

OK, onto this weekend.... I went to the Twins concert in SF after taking him to the airport. While I am not a fan of this group, it was definitely an interesting experience. (It's been 10+ years since I last went to a Chinese pop concert.) Twins aren't exactly great performers, but, overall, I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't walk in with any expectations. (I watched one of their concerts on DVD once... And, let's just say there aren't quite a bit of room for improvements.)

I don't know any of their new songs, but I do recognize quite a few of their older song. Although... I gotta say it's interesting to see 2 people in their mid-twenties singing 明愛暗戀補習社. -_-"

There were rumors that Twins will go their separate ways, but them being such perfect complements to each other that I don't think they can continue their singing careers as solos. But, maybe singing isn't really what they're after. After all, Sa was recently named best actress in 金紫荊 and a Korean film festival. She didn't make a great impression on me as an actress, but maybe she's improved tremendously in the past year or so.

And... I spent most of Sunday making a cake for my mom. Here are the pictures of the damage I did to the kitchen... and some chocolate calligraphy. :P

Sleepless Night...

I probably got about 2 hours of shut-eye last night. Try as I might, but I just couldn't sleep. The fact that I didn't eat dinner last night might have attributed to my insomnia, but there wasn't anything I could do if even the smell of food seemed revolting to me. No, I'm not anorexic. It's just a phase. My body has been acting very strangely lately (e.g. fever out of nowhere, feeling nauseous for no good reason, etc.) It's almost as if my body is fed up with my bad habits and is trying to tell me I better stop or else...

Many things have happened in the past couple of weeks. Family member having passed away, friends facing difficult situations, direction of my career changing, him deciding to go to Beijing for at least a year... But, these are not the things that are keeping me up. At least, I don't think they are. I thought blogging would help me clear my mind so that I could finally get some sleep before the long day of bachelorette party in SF, but I realized I wasn't really thinking about anything in particular as soon as I logged into Blogger (after dropping my laptop and damaging the floor...) But, I figured since I had damaged the hardwood floor for this, I might as well think of something to blog just so the damage isn't completely pointless.

A couple of months ago, he and I had a strange conversation about how we and the people around us had become relatively stagnant. This is not to say that things have become boring. It's just that a few years ago, when people were just finishing school, there were a lot more movements. Everything seemed possible. But, of course, just coz we said things are pretty stable, the whole world seemed to have suddenly shifted. People are moving into and out of the Bay Area again, planning drastic career changes, and so on.

He announced to some of our friends that he'd be going to Beijing for a year during dinner last night. And, to my surprise, people were quite shocked when he broke the news. Maybe it's coz he's talked about the possibility of moving to Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong for so long that this decision just came natural for me. From the time we went to Beijing for the first time, I've known that he's going to want to move back to Asia sometime in the future. I guess what added to the surprise is that, this time, I'm not going to move to Beijing with him.

Truth be told, who wants to have a long-distance relationship? Let alone a long-distance marriage. But, it is what it is. This is a great opportunity for him, so I definitely don't want him to pass it up just for me, especially when I understand how important his career is to him. Besides, I'll try to figure something out. I know I've talked about leaving the firm for the longest time now, but with the new group and salary, I really want to give it another try. What complicates things a little more is that I can't really make my decision until I learn more about my new group - whenever I get a new career counselor... And, learning from last time's experience, I'm not moving out of the Bay Area without a job again. Yes, I can find a job when I get there, but being friendless, familyless, and jobless in a foreign country will drive me nuts! (Had I not found the internship last time, I would have bailed out of Beijing early.) Since I don't intend to stay in Beijing forever, an internal project within the firm would be my first choice.

From the way things are looking right now, end of December is probably the earliest that I can leave. And, it's a lot more likely for me to land on a job in Shanghai, which brings in a whole slew of different complications... Oh well, I've known from the time when I rejected the BoA job (5 offers from 1000+ applicants) that I'm not the career girl that I thought I would grow up to be. Anyway, whatever the final outcome is, life goes on.

Butter Pound Cake

One of the things I said I'd do in the beginning of this year is to take better care of myself. After not doing anything about that for 8 whole months, I finally realized I better get my act together before the year comes to an end. So, I've decided to make myself eat some kind of breakfast everyday.

Yogurt and smoothies are great coz I can always take them on the go, but I suddenly craved for butter pound cake... Haha! And, making a pound cake is a good way to use up all the unsalted butter I got for all my other dessert endeavors.

Here's the recipe I used:

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 6 eggs
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons lemon extract
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9 or 10 inch tube pan.
  2. With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and mix well.
  3. Introduce the flour, one cup at a time while adding cream a little at a time until all flour and cream is mixed in well.
  4. Add the vanilla and lemon flavoring and blend well. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  5. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 1-1/2 hours or until center springs back from small amount of pressure. Immediately turn out on cake rack to cool.
